In an interview with the news outlet Reuters on May 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will continue serving as president of Ukraine due to the replacement of civilian government by military rule – a decision that has been met with widespread criticism.
“My five-year term is not over yet,” he said. “It is continuing due to martial law.” The comedian-turned-war leader also said that “it is difficult to assess my activities during these five years” and that “it would not be that ethical now.” (Related: Zelensky’s presidential term has EXPIRED, but he still remains as Ukraine’s de facto chief executive.)
Zelensky signed into law the extension of martial law and general mobilization from May 14 to August 11. If the martial law had not been rolled out, the presidential election would have been held on March 31 and Zelensky’s term would have ended on May 20. The Martial Law Act explicitly bans presidential, parliamentary and local elections.
Veteran Navy intel officer Jack Posobiec posted on X, formerly Twitter, that even though Zelensky’s term was over, he had extended his term based on the said act. Social media platform X CEO and tech mogul Elon Musk replied to the thread questioning the point of the United States’ mission in Ukraine which is to make sure democracy is practiced. “But I thought we were there to ‘uphold democracy?'” Musk posted.
Posobiec immediately replied: “In democracy 2.0 the demos are replaced by the kratia,” sarcastically explaining that the Greek term “demos” or people is thrown away in favor of “kratia,” which means “rule.”
Another X user commented: “Their new excuse for not holding elections is … only when they recapture all of their territory, which means Zelensky remains President as long as the U.S.A. funds the war. The only question now is, which country will he flee to in exile once his regime is ousted.”
But this may still be far-fetched, as the Ukrainian president wants to still be in position until the very end of the war or until the U.S. and Western allies are still funneling taxpayers’ money to fund this conflict.
“They [Ukrainians] were fighting for what was close to their hearts. But it is not over and this is not the end of the story. I believe we need to be moving forward together till the end, the victorious end,” Zelensky said. He also warned last year that Ukrainian elections would not be held until the war with Russia was over. The president also bluntly admitted that the elections would be held only if the U.S. and Europe still gives him money despite the country being under martial law.
In November, he reiterated that it was “not the right time for elections.” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said during a recent trip to Kyiv that there would be elections at such time as all Ukrainians could vote, even those who have fled the nation amid the ongoing war.
Meanwhile, Zelensky’s critics claim that the country’s constitution does not authorize extending his presidential term under martial law and that his legitimacy as president stops on May 20. However, some constitutional lawyers dispute this, saying that the Constitution allows such an extension.
In a video released by his office, Zelensky reported that everything happening in Ukraine, even on the front lines, is being reported to its partner states.
Zelensky said he has discussed with the president of Romania the cooperation on security and stability in the region and the entire Europe. He also talked with the president of Angola about the possibilities of bilateral cooperation and even invited him to visit Ukraine. He also spoke with the prime minister of Iraq and tackled the need for maximum stability in the world.
“I also spoke today with the President of Azerbaijan about the situation in the energy sector in our country and cooperation between our countries in this field. Today [May 21] I also met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany. I thanked her for all the support provided,” he reported.
“Every new connection of Ukraine with the world, every strengthened communication and cooperation means additional opportunities for all of us to protect the lives of our people, our cities and communities, to ensure the strength of our army, and to bring real peace closer.”
He then thanked everyone who fights and works for Ukraine and its people and those who enhance our defense capabilities – meaning its Western allies.
