Eco-terrorists recently sabotaged Tesla’s European Gigafactory near Berlin, Germany.
The attack on the gigafactory, approximately 60 miles southeast of the German capital, set an electricity pylon close to the site ablaze. While the site itself – Tesla’s first major manufacturing plant in Europe – was unharmed, it did cause production to shut down for several days.
The attack also temporarily left more than 60,000 German residents in Brandenburg state and in parts of southeastern Berlin without power, which has raised concerns over how the country can defend itself when infrastructure critical to the economy and society is attacked by vandals, criminals, saboteurs or worse.
Company statements indicate that, with more than 1,000 Tesla vehicles left unfinished in the plant when work was forced to shut down, the company’s estimated losses range anywhere from the high hundreds of millions to over $1 billion.
“We are shocked by what happened today. It’s the second direct attack on power supply to the factory, and there was a third attack on the railway nearby. We are very concerned,” said plant head Andre Thierig. He added that the gigafactory managed to safely conduct an emergency shutdown, involving decanting motel aluminum from its smelters before they solidified.
In his reaction to the sabotage incident, Tesla CEO Elon Musk called it “extremely dumb.”
“These are either the dumbest eco-terrorists on Earth or they’re puppets of those who don’t have good environmental goals,” said Musk on X, formerly Twitter.
“Stopping production of electric vehicles, rather than fossil fuel vehicles, ist extreme dumm,” he added, using the German words for “extremely dumb.” (Related: Tesla factory robot reportedly ATTACKS worker in violent malfunction that left “trail of blood.”)
A far-left eco-terrorist and self-proclaimed activist group called the Volcano Group has claimed responsibility for the sabotage incident in a 2,500-word attack on Tesla and Musk.
“The complete destruction of the Gigafactory and the lopping off of technofacsists like ‘Elend’ Musk are a step on the path towards liberation from the patriarchy,” wrote an individual within the Volcano Group under the pseudonym “Agua De Pau,” the name of a volcanic mountain in the Azores. The group used wordplay for Musk’s first name, substituting it for the German word for “misery.”
“Tesla consumes earth, resources, people, workers and in return spits out 6,000 SUVs, killer cars and monster trucks each week,” read the letter.
German authorities are confirming the authenticity of the Volcano Group’s manifesto. Federal Minister of the Interior and Community Nancy Faeser has vowed serious consequences for whoever set the pylon on fire.
“If a left-wing extremist motive is confirmed, then this is further evidence that the left-wing extremist scene does not shy away from attacks on critical energy infrastructure,” said Faeser. “The consequences can affect thousands of completely uninvolved people, as they do today. This shows enormous criminal energy.”
